KYNDAL STRIKES GOLD AT THE INTERNATIONAL WINE AND SPIRIT COMPETITION 05/07/2002

Glasgow based spirits company Kyndal has secured recognition for thirty four of its key brands at the annual judging of the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) – the ‘Oscars’ of the wine and spirit industry - and is still in the running for “International Distiller of the Year” an award its master blender Richard Paterson picked up last year.

Eight months after emerging from Scotland’s biggest ever management buy-out, Kyndal’s haul included trophies for ‘Best Liqueur’ for Glayva and ‘Best Vodka’ for Vladivar Ultimate and gold awards for five brands, including Isle of Jura 27 year old and Whyte and Mackay 12 Year Old. A host of silver, bronze or commendations were awarded to other brands within the company’s portfolio.

The IWSC aims to promote the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs. Judging is based on a two-stage process including professional tasting and chemical analysis. Winners of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals are restricted to one in each product category to ensure the quality and prestige of each winner.

The prestigious IWSC “International Distiller of the Year” award for 2002, which was last year accepted by Kyndal’s master blender Richard Paterson, will be announced at a special Banquet in October.

Brian Megson, chief executive of Kyndal commented: “These awards are a testament to the enthusiasm with which our team has met the opportunity presented by the MBO last year and the quality of their work. We rely on the reputation of our brand portfolio and own label products and these industry accolades help us in performing on an international stage.”

Richard Paterson master blender of Kyndal and last year’s “International Distiller of the Year” concluded: "There are generations of distilling expertise in these products and it's thanks to the dedication and commitment from our production staff we have managed to achieve this outstanding success.”

Headquartered in Glasgow and employing over 750 people in Scotland, Kyndal has a nine per cent share of the worldwide Scotch whisky market with brands such as Whyte & Mackay, Dalmore and Isle of Jura. The senior management of Kyndal last year completed the acquisition of JBB (Greater Europe) in the biggest management buy-out in Scotland. Kyndal has five malt distilleries, a grain distillery and bottling and packaging facilities in Scotland. In the year ended December 2000, Kyndal generated an operating profit of £20.4 million from sales of £126 million, representing 7.4 million cases of spirits. In addition to its brand sales which include Vladivar, Veba, and Glayva, Kyndal is the world’s leading supplier of private label Scotch whisky.

Dewar's World of Whisky of Aberfeldy, Perthshire, is to sponsor the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for the next five years.

Dewar's is a visitor centre which interactively explores the history and development of the Dewar's brand. Neil Boyd, Director of Marketing for Dewar's, and Brigadier Melville Jameson, Chief Executive and Producer of the Tattoo, shared a toast at the event's Edinburgh headquarters in recognition of the agreement. To celebrate The Queen's Golden Jubilee, this year's Tattoo will feature the largest gathering of drums and pipes ever seen on the Castle Esplanade. In addition, for every ticket sold to the Tattoo, a free ticket to Dewar's World of Whisky will be issued. Visit these sites for detail: www.dewars.com/worldofwhisky

The first on-line whisky valuation service

Visitors to the Glenfiddich website can now have their whiskies valued for the first time on-line. The service works by matching the whisky details supplied (distillery and age) with actual auction prices earned by similar bottlings sold by McTear's auction house in Glasgow.

According to Martin Green, Whisky Consultant, the service is "the most up-to-date and visitor friendly on-line guide for people interested in valuable whiskies. It reflects the actual hammer prices...the only website to achieve this."

To try it out for yourself, visit www.glenfiddich.com
