Remark : Words from Michael Jackson :
Scapa flow, a stretch of water linking the North Sea to the Atlantic, is famous for its roles in both World Wars, The distillery, near Kirkwall, fails to be the northern most in Scotland by only half a mile. It was founded in 1885, and was powered by a waterwheel that has now been restored. Two of the original warehouses survive, accommodating empty casks, but most of the present fabric dates from 1959.
The water supply is very peaty, but the distillery uses wholly unpeated malt. It has a Lomond wash-still, which may contribute to a slight oiliness of the whisky. Maturation is in Bourbon casks, and that may account for the vanilla notes, sometimes suggesting very spicy chocolate - or licorice of the salty style made in the Netherlands.

House style Salt, hay. Oily, spicy chocolate. Aperitif.

Other remarks:
The distillery was mothballed in 1994. They use Ex-bourbon barrels. The distillery has 1 wash still and 1 spirit still.

From Collins Pocket Reference 'Whisky':
Scapa is one of two distilleries in Kirkwall (Highland Park being the other), yet despite their proximity, their whiskies taste quite different. Scapa was built in 1885 by Macfarlane and Townsend - the later already a well known distiller on Speyside - and was bought by Hiram Walker in 1954. It is now owned by Allied Distillers who send most of its produce for blending, but also market the single largly througt duty-free outlets. The distillery overlooks the giant natural bay of Scapa Flow, a major Royal Navy anchorage in both world wars. The German fleet was scuttled there during the First World War, and the distillery itself was saved form destruction by fire by ships in the bay around that time.
Comment : Scapa is available mainly from independent bottlers and is a medium bodied malt with a dryish, heathery flavour which is complemented by a satisfyingly malty sweetness.
Visitors : The distillery has no reception centre, but visitors are welcome by appointment. Phone : 01856-872071 to arrange.
