SWISS TAX ON SCOTCH HALVED

The tax on Scotch Whisky in Switzerland will fall by more than SF8 (£3.40) a bottle today, following a tax cut of 50%.

The cut is part of a package of reforms being introduced to Switzerland’s alcohol tax structure. All spirits will now be taxed at the same rate according to alcohol content.

The reforms, which include a small tax rise for some local spirits, see the tax on Scotch Whisky cut from SF58 a litre of pure alcohol to SF29 per lpa.

The Director General of The Scotch Whisky Association, Hugh Morison said: “The removal of tax discrimination against Scotch Whisky in Switzerland has been a longstanding objective of the Scotch Whisky industry. We are delighted that Switzerland has, today, both met its international trade obligations and given a boost to the Scotch Whisky industry by equalising the duty on all spirits.”

Exports of Scotch Whisky to Switzerland in 1998 rose 7 per cent to £9.5 million.
