The largest ever Scotch Whisky trade mission aimed at boosting sales in the Far East visits Japan and Korea this week.
Top of the industry's agenda is seizing the opportunity for increased sales which arises in Japan later this year when the taxes on Scotch Whisky begin to be equalised.
More than twenty companies, large and small, representing more than 80 per cent of the Scotch Whisky industry will visit Osaka and Tokyo.
Seminars on Scotch Whisky, including a blending demonstration for press and trade, plus a commercial exhibition of companies' brands will ensure the Scotch message reaches as wide an audience as possible.
Tony Tucker, Director of Public Affairs and The Scotch Whisky Association, who is leading the mission, is optimistic that the companies will grab the chance to boost exports to a market which already is worth £128 million, and the fifth largest export market for Scotch Whisky.
He said: "Reform of the liquor tax system presents a major opportunity for Scotch Whisky. Drinkers in Japan will now be able to choose what they wish to drink on the basis of their taste and preference, rather than have their choice distorted by tax. It is our intention to ensure that they choose Scotch, with its wide range of flavours, bouquets and characteristics."
