SCOTCH INDUSTRY WELCOMES REDUCED DISCRIMINATION
The Scotch Whisky industry welcomed the Chancellor’s freeze on spirits duty which, combined with duty rises on other drinks, narrowed the duty discrimination against Scotch Whisky and other spirits.
The Scotch Whisky Association was pleased that the Chancellor recognised ‘the competitive position of the spirits industry’.
The Association’s Director General, Hugh Morison, said: “The government’s own economic advisors reported at the end of last year that spirits were highly price sensitive, and we are delighted that this advice was heeded by the Chancellor.
“Ultimately the Treasury is going to have to tackle the growth of cross-Channel shopping through lowering duty rates, but tonight the industry will raise a glass in toast of a further step towards a modern tax system and the removal over time of duty discrimination.”
